Attitudes are EVERYTHING!

Garden

The longer I live, the more I realize the importance of attitude on life. To me, our attitudes make the most impact on our life either negative or positive.  Attitudes are more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.  They are more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.  Attitudes will make or break marriages, families, individuals and even entire communities, cities and nations.

You and I have a choice every day regarding the attitudes that we will embrace daily. We may not be able to change our past or the people surrounding us but, we can change our thoughts and attitudes.  Someone once said that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it.  Ultimately, we are in charge of our attitudes!

Attitudes do not run on automatic. I am responsible for my attitude and how I manage it. We choose what attitudes we will have and it’s a continuing choice.  The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take responsibility of our attitudes.

IT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENS TO ME THAT MATTERS BUT WHAT HAPPENS IN ME!

Some people believe that happiness can be found in a position or a place or even in a particular person.   I believe happiness is a feeling but, joy is a state of being!  We alone get to choose.

Our feelings come from our thoughts. And we can change our feelings by changing ONE thing right now – our thoughts!

This is one of my go-to bible verses to ponder on when I realize I need an attitude adjustment.

FIX YOUR THOUGHTS ON WHAT IS TRUE, AND HONORABLE, AND RIGHT, AND PURE, AND LOVELY, AND ADMIRABLE. THINK ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE EXCELLENT AND WORTHY OF PRAISE.

PHILLIPIANS 4:8 NLT

Changing our thoughts and attitudes isn’t always a stroll in the park. It takes a conscious effort, a daily resolve and a decision to be intentional every moment of every day.  But hard work always pays off and eventually negative attitudes can and will change to positive ones if we stay consistent.  The more we recognize and even label our negative thoughts, we can then weed them out.  And then replacing them with positive ones becomes much easier.

Some may think I am odd but, I LOVE to pull weeds. Especially during the Spring while it is still fairly cool.  Pulling weeds provides me with instant gratification of my labors.  After digging all the bothersome weeds out, I can stand back and gaze at my flower bed and see tidiness and room for my flowering plants to spread and thrive.  It is the same with our thought life.

To me, weeds represent negative thoughts and bad habits. When I spend time weeding out all the troublesome thoughts, I can plant new and healthy thoughts.  Thoughts that will flourish and produce beauty to me and everyone around me.

We need to constantly prune out the things that are hindering us so that our lives can be lush and green in our quest for a joyous and productive life.  Attitudes truly make a difference!

If you think you are beaten, you are.

If you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you’d like to win but think you can’t,

It’s almost certain you won’t.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man,

But sooner or later, the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can.

WHY is it so HARD?

Everything we need

I have the lovely pleasure and honor every week to minister hope to others. As I share with men and woman alike, the love of God, His hope and power, I hear a phrase repeatedly, “It’s so hard!”  These words always cause an agitation inside of me anytime I hear them – especially when it is coming from someone who professes to be a follower of Jesus.

As believers and disciples, we have beautiful promises given to us. One of them is that our heavenly Father has given us ALL things that pertain to life and godliness.  This promise is found in 2 Peter 1:3.  “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.”

Wow! Isn’t this an incredible revelation of the deep mercy of our God?  He has called us to live a different life AND equipped us with everything we need to walk it out.  It is only hard, when we don’t realize the promises and power that is available to us on a daily basis.

So instead of professing over ourselves, “it is sooooo hard” perhaps, the better declaration would be, “thank you Father, that with you and through you, I can make changes in my life for the better.” I really believe that every time we focus on the negative, we empower that in our life. However, if we chose to shift our perspective and focus on what God can do, that we cannot do apart from Him, we automatically empower HIS life to flow in and through us.  All this is so that we can accomplish the difficult, the unmanageable, or the stubborn things of our life.

“Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”  Matthew 19:26

This is why we are admonished to dwell on things that come from God, not on the challenges and/or problems of this earth. Because whatever we focus on will grow and magnify in our life.

“Set your mind on things above, not on the things of the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”  Col. 3:2-3

I love to meditate on the truth and reality that my life is hidden with Jesus in God. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine the truth of this promise.  I think on it, till I see it!  As we meditate on God’s truths, and actually see them in a way that they become a part of us, then transformation begins to occur.

Now, whenever trials present themselves, and they will, this truth flows out of my mouth – God has given me His power, His love and mercy to walk through it and transform me for the better!

Moving forward, any time you are tempted to say “it is so hard” remember, that God’s divine power and love has given you everything you need to live a victorious life – an over-coming life!

If you would like to know the power and love of God, simply stop and pray this prayer from your heart.

“Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God and you are God. I confess with my mouth that You, Jesus, are Lord, the Ruler over all. You are the Christ, the Son of God.  You came into this world to show us the way we are to live and to provide eternal life to those who would accept you.  I believe in my heart that God raised you from the dead and you are alive forevermore, seated on your throne in heaven next to the Father. I believe your blood was shed on the cross to cleanse me from all my sin.  I receive you as my personal Lord, King and Commander. I invite you into my life as the Lord and Ruler of my life. I no longer choose to be in charge of my life. I give it to you. I invite you, Jesus, to have first place in my heart and my life. Restore me to a right relationship as a child of my heavenly Father.” Mark 1:15; Romans 10:9; John 3:16; John 1:11, 12

As you thank Him from your heart, you will walk in a greater dimension of joy and peace. Walking in gratitude daily is one of the keys to living free from depression and anxiety. Give Him thanks in all things!

You can do this my friend. I believe it is possible. It has worked in my life and it will work in yours. Dare to believe ALL the promises in God’s holy word. His truths will radically transform, convert and change you into someone you won’t even recognize!

The Ironies of the Cross

Streams in the desert

Our God works in mysterious ways. He reminds us of this in the book of Isaiah, that His ways are not our ways, nor are His thoughts our thoughts.  The bible is a book stacked with irony and full of mystery.  The first irony I want to look at today is of the cross.

It is where we see evil intention being transformed into divine salvation.

God interrupted the evil schemes of man and Satan when He resurrected Christ from the dead. For we read in the book of Acts that death could not hold Him.  God, in His divine justice, overruled all wicked intentions and used their very acts of disobedience to bring life and salvation to the entire world, for anyone who would receive.

The second irony we see is that resurrection comes THROUGH crucifixion. The cross represents death, pain and suffering.  It is out of this death that LIFE appears.  To personalize this truth, we realize that our own death to self must occur so that we can encounter HIS glorious life and vanquish all evil in our being.  Jesus so eloquently tells us in the book of John, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels–a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.  Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.” John 12:24-26 NLT

Inside of Jesus’ words is the startling truth that if we desire to save our life we will lose it. However, when we choose to lose our life for His sake, we are then able to find true life- This is good news!

It is on the cross that Jesus once and for all defeated Satan. Paul reminds us in Colossians that we have been made alive with Christ, the anointed One, because He disarmed the powers and authorities and triumphed over them all by the cross.  Col. 2:13-15

Again, we see that out of death, our enemy has been defeated and we can now enter into the abundant life that Jesus calls us to.

My friend, are you truly living today? Are you focusing on the goodness of God despite your current situations?  If not, I want to encourage you to enter into the fullness of God’s goodness.  God will sometimes confront us with deep pain and suffering because He desires to reveal His goodness to us.    We experience the goodness of God only through the revelation of His glory, which is His unique nature and essence.   God displays Himself as supremely good in the midst of the most intense evil and suffering experienced on this earth – the cross of Calvary.

I have a quote hanging in my office that reads, “If I don’t see the cross and what Jesus did for me, then I can NEVER be truly free.”

God has overturned all human pain because He experienced it for us. He displayed His goodness by suffering on our behalf.

And so I leave you with this…..Make pain your friend! Cause any and all pain in your life to catapult you into the arms of a loving Father who created you and has a divine purpose for you here on this earth and for all eternity.  Memorize Jeremiah 29:11 and meditate on its truths and goodness.  Allow pain to bring you to a place of complete dependence on the One who formed you in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139)

Whatever you do, don’t try and escape from your pain, but be with it. Because the attempt to escape from pain only creates more pain.” – Asian Proverb

It is through our pain and suffering that we experience lasting joy and encounter His beautiful glory.  Romans 8:17

The Son Has Risen

dawn3

The Son

Any freedom I walk in is because of God’s grace.

It is not anything I have done except lean into Him and make Him my life….my essence!

The letter of the law nearly strangled me to death; my paltry obedience was never enough.

I was suffocating under its weight.

I was broken beyond repair……except for the CROSS!

He stepped down from the glory and came to save me; He left to come and find me.

He became my darkness; He took what was mine and gave me His.

He is my morning! He is my new beginning; He is my dawn.

And now I share in the brightness of His love and His power has reached me.

No longer forsaken, but received.

No longer a beggar, but a daughter.

It is out of my brokenness that He comes and shines through.

And now He says that I am altogether lovely

No stain or blemish found within.

I am forgiven. I am cleansed.  His mercies are new.

They have kissed with truth – righteous has sprung forth.

Good morning beautiful you, you are worth waking for!

Abiding…Remaining

fruit2

As I was reading John chapter 15 this morning, I saw a vision of a massive vineyard. The plants within the vineyard were healthy and mature and laden with massive amounts of fruit.  So much fruit that the branches could not bear it all.  As a result, fruit had begun to drop on the ground.  It was a beautiful sight and as I was marveling at its abundance, I saw Jesus begin to walk up and down the rows of the vineyard.  He was smiling from ear to ear.  In His hand was a large basket, and He was bending down and picking up all the fruit from the ground.  His joy was undeniable and His excitement over His vineyard was evident.  When His basket was full, He walked out of the vineyard, and began to distribute to all the people that were outside.  As the people received the gift of fruit, transformations began to occur.  When people touched the fruit, they were filled with joy, peace and healing.  Instantly, souls were delivered from darkness and pain.

Jesus was laughing and proclaiming, “Yes my loved ones, abide in My love for you. Love one another, as I have loved you so deeply.”  He joined in the dancing and soon a huge celebration began.  Children and adults of all sizes and colors poured into the streets.

Instantly, there was a banner overhead with these words:

“I am the vine, and you are the branches. The one who abides and remains in Me will bear much fruit!”

My friends, as we stay connected to our true source of life, Jesus, we will produce fruit for the entire world. We are called to be a blessing!  My prayer every morning has been:  “Father, I want to love you with all my heart, mind and strength today.  I want to love others and serve others today.  Show me what to do today so that is accomplished.”

It is an incredible adventure to serve the King of the Universe. Each day is new and fresh.  And for those of us who are following Jesus, there are no bad days, only days of MORE grace!

As we grow and mature into beautiful plantings of the Lord, may we be branches that drip with lots and lots of sustaining fruit. This world is starving for a substance that produces satisfaction deep within and yet, many do not know where to find it.  I encourage you to take your fruit out into the streets, as Jesus did, and bless as many people who will receive.  You never know whose life will be impacted and changed forever!

“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you and that your joy may be full.”

The greatest antidote to depression, worry and anxiety is the abundant joy of living inside of Christ’s love. May you encounter His peace, love and mercy fresh and new today.  And may you go and serve others so they can know the Father’s heart and nature.

Taste and see that the LORD is good!

Love, Lisa

Open Letter of Thanks!

Love2

Dear Faithful William –

Thank you for not quitting! Thank you for not throwing in the towel, telling me “adios baby” and walking away.  You have every reason and right but, you have chosen the narrow and high road.  Thank you!

Thank you for not giving up on me as I strive to grow up and become the Godly woman I desire. Thank you for believing in me when I couldn’t do that for myself. The world may not thank you, but I do. Thank you for loving me with an unconditional love that frees me to become more!

Thank you for putting God and faith first. Because of this, our family has not crumbled and been destroyed.  Thank you for getting up early to read and spend time in prayer.  The world may call you a fool, but they don’t recognize the gift like you do.  You have made spiritual matters a priority in our life and the results are more valuable than gold and rubies.   Others may look for a big, fat bank account and a vacation house, except those things are not important to you.  Thank you for putting eternity first!

Over the years, you have worked so hard. Many, many hours, so that our family could thrive. You went without and always took “less” so that we could have more.  Others may not have noticed, but I do.  Thank you!

You chose without complaint to drive the old clunky car with peeling paint so that we could have nicer, newer cars. Our neighbors probably wondered…and yet, I didn’t.  Because I knew – you preferred us over yourself.  Thank you!

You turned down lots of fun, fishing trips with the guys so that you could stay home and be a dad. You knew I needed a break from being a mom to 3 little girls who had more energy than both of us together. Your friends didn’t understand why, but I do.  Thank you!

Others may see you as quiet and silent, but I know your mind is full of ideas and thoughts on how to improve our family, marriage and world. People may think you are too quiet, and yet, I know the treasury of knowledge and wisdom that is stored away inside.  Thank you for choosing your words wisely!

You have cooked, cleaned, done the laundry, grocery shopped and more. You have broken all traditional roles of who or what a man and husband is to be.  The world may not have appreciated your example but, I have.  Thank you!

I have been afforded a life of ease in so many ways because you sheltered me and the girls by taking the brunt of responsibility. Responsible for our finances, our future, our provision and our dreams.  You have led us quietly when others may have demanded or forced.  Thank you for leading by example – it is has been more effective and produced more fruit than most can see.

The lined pages of your prayer journals are a legacy that this world can never appreciate, but I do. And your children and grandchildren do – thank you!  You have inspired me, encouraged me and fought the good fight with me.  I am thankful, I am grateful and I deeply, deeply appreciate YOU!

I am so honored that God chose you to walk this journey of life with me. To HIM be all the glory!

Divine Romance

Divine Romance

Is It The Greatest Challenge on Earth???

My husband and I have been together for over 27 years with 3 grown daughters who are our delight and joy!

To say that our home and union has always been filled with unconditional love, peace and joy would be a false statement and would be deceitful. Marriage is hard work!  Two becoming one requires death, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to the vows you proclaimed on your wedding day.  Some days are extremely painful and there can be feelings of rejection, anger and betrayal.  There are moments when you believe “I should have never married this person” and doubt can cloud everything sacred. Being married forces you to face some ugly character issues you would probably NEVER realize otherwise. But the good news is you are not alone and you do not lack the resources needed to restore and rebuild a marriage that is crumbling.

Strong marriages, Christian or not, will be struck by lightning – sexual temptations, communication problems, major frustrations and unrealized expectations. But I have concluded that if Christian marriages especially, are watered with the word and presence of Christ daily, then conditions will not be ready for a destroying fire to consume them and/or their families.

“If I am only married for happiness and my happiness wanes for whatever reason, one little spark will burn the entire forest of my relationship.” ~ Gary Thomas

One of the reasons that my husband and I have determined to keep our marriage together is not because doing so would make us both happy, and it hasn’t been because we did not want our kids to know the pain of divorce (because we certainly did not). The main motivation for keeping my marriage in tact is because of the vows I made to God the day I surrendered my life to Him.  Since one of my core values is based on proclaiming God’s message of love and reconciliation to the world, I realized that my marriage needed to reflect this truth.  How can I love mankind unconditionally and proclaim reconciliation to the world if my marriage is seeking to be dissolved and finished?

Putting my relationship with Christ first becomes the plumb line for everything else in my life to hang on. When pleasing my heavenly Father is more important than pleasing my spouse or myself, there is balance and order that can produce fruit that others can enjoy.  Not giving up when things get tough, and learning to lean into the pain of conflict and being misunderstood is a huge victory.  One that will produce life, growth and maturity.  Our old pastor used to teach us that marriage is a tool designed by God to conform us into the image of Jesus.  The choice is to allow the tool to be effective in our life or not.

I am convinced that God planted marriage among mankind in order to display the mysteries of His own eternal and spiritual existence. Marriage can become a vehicle that will catapult you into knowing your Creator in ways you never imagined and your life can be filled with deep purpose and satisfaction as you grow to know and love Him fully.  Let us take the challenge of “being fully enlightened to know Him and His calling” (Ephesians 1:18)

May we ever have before us the knowledge that our marriage is not just about “us” but about what God is building through and in us. It is about growing His kingdom on earth and displaying His forgiveness, love and redemption in all ways to all people.  I want my life, marriage and my children to be so fruitful that the world cannot not deny the goodness of God’s spirit living in and through us.  I want everyone who comes into contact with us to benefit from HIS life in us.  For where the kingdom of God dwells there is righteousness, peace and joy! (Romans 14:17)

Let us conclude with this thought: Perhaps the real purpose of marriage is not for my own happiness as much as it is for His holiness.

“Those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again.” 2 Corinthians 5:15

****I have read countless books on marriage but my all time favorite is “Sacred Marriage” by Gary Thomas.  If you are serious about your relationship with God and your spouse then get a copy today – read it together and pray daily for one another.  I promise you will not regret it!

With deep love and affection – Lisa
